Grandmas House – Blue Oblivion
Grandmas House close out the singles from “Baby You’re A Winner” with “Blue Oblivion”. The band call it a turning point, the song that made them realise they didn’t need to stay inside any particular genre. You can hear that decision play out in real time here: churning verses that lean hard on early PJ Harvey, a guitar line that slithers rather than riffs, then a chorus that just detonates.
Producer Ali Chant, who’s worked with PJ Harvey herself along with Perfume Genius and Yard Act, gets the contrast right. The verses stay tight and coiled, almost withholding, then the chorus opens up into something much more physical. It’s a simple structural trick but it works because the band commit to both ends of it.
“Blue Oblivion” is the last preview before “Baby You’re A Winner” lands on August 21st via Brace Yourself Records, following earlier cuts “DOG”, “The Table” and the title track. Twelve songs, apparently ranging from elastic rock to brass-inflected post-punk to a chamber-folk closer, so this single is really just one register out of several.
